There are different kind of compilers in different Platforms...
Check out for VC++, C-Builder, eclipse, gcc, ...

I hope this doesn't sound too mean spirited, but if you don't know the
answers to the above, then maybe developing a new language is not a
project you should be embarking on. Try learning 5 or 10 languages
first...

I had thoughts that way too.
If you want to develop a Domain Specific Language, I have heard that
Ruby is great. Could be great also to build up some prototype of the
language you want to design.

Have a look at the 'Amsterdam Compiler Kit", it help a great deal in
developing a compiler. http://sourceforge.net/projects/tack/
