What can I do?

Based on very high TekChek score for C++ I'm confident of my C++
abilities. Unfortunately without good enough qualifications, (a 2-2
degree in Computer Technology), or any relevant experience of MFC,
embedded programming, sockets, financial markets, Linux development,
etc, etc, I've been unable to find any software development job for 2.5
years. So if anyone has any suggestions as to what other career I might
be able to obtain interesting employment, I'd be glad to know.

Try writing. You know, write a novel. Or a screenplay.

Never mind that. Try becoming a tester (QA technician, QA engineer).

Also, read up on topicality of newsgroups. 'misc.jobs.*' is the hierarchy
you actually need to post to.

Car salesman comes to mind. That's what I did.

Magic depends on tradition and belief. It does not welcome observation,
nor does it profit by experiment. On the other hand, science is based
on experience; it is open to correction by observation and experiment.

....during which time, you could work on some open-source projects and
get some real C++ experience.
