using .so file

Hello,

I'm cross-compiling, and there is a .so file on the
target system that I need to use. Can someone
tell me how to compile so that I can make function
calls on the target system to use the routines in
the .so? I am currently using -static but I assume
I need to make an exception for any .so files.

I am also willing to use dlopen but there are,
actually, several interrelated .so files. I'm not
sure if dlopen'ing one .so that itself relies
on another .so will work.
