Use MySQL. There is also a c++ library for mysql i.e. mysql++ ( http://tangentsoft.net/mysql++/ ) you can use
By the way. This is a news group for c++.

Would SQLite be useful? its more than open source, its in the public domain,
and it has a C++ API.
