How can I synchronize access to a shared data structure?

Well, that's not a C++ (or C) issue. That's Operating
System specific. Some possible tools are semaphore, mutex,
critical section, etc. The tools actually available to you
depend on the target Operating System.

Ask in a newsgroup specific to the target Operating System
to get more definitive answers.

You can use a synchronized smart pointer.
Check out the following links:

There are examples in the comment section of the sync_ptr class header.

The sync_ptr class is portable between Win32 and UNIX/Linux, and any
other POSIX OS.

You can also take a look at zthread library which also has the same
portability.
