modem initializing

I have a problem in my program in order to open the port and dial a
number,the program receives a number from Id_edit in the dialog box
wich it's member variable is "number" but after I press dial botton I
receive "Error:invalid property value" but there is no any error in my
program.
please help your new friend!

MSComm1.SetCommPort(2);
MSComm1.SetSettings("9600,N,8,1");
MSComm1.SetPortOpen(TRUE);
// Activate the modem and dial a phone number.
UpdateData(TRUE);
COleVariant number;
MSComm1.SetOutput(number);

And here you create another variable called 'number'
and never assign anything to it
MSComm1.SetOutput(number);
