Borland's 'Make' Utility Question [ OT ??]

Dear Friends,

(If I'm at the wrong group -- please point the way -- Thanks)

I have written the substance of this message at another 'C' group but have
received no response so far ...

Anyway, am have problems with the following statement in a response file to
the Make utility:

@echo $(**)^, + >> makeE.tmp

This statement (& macro) works correctly on both WinXP home and
Professional.

However, under Win98SE, Make quietly aborts leaving the makeE.tmp holding
only one line (from a previous 'echo' statement)

TIA,

-Mel Smith
