Remote ip status

Hi,
I am developing an network appln.
I want to see if a remote ip (public) is online or offline.
I am currently using ping, but is there any other way to do this? Preferably faster?

This is no way to do that in standard C++. You need some kind
of networking extensions usually provided by your OS/platform.
Please post your question to a newsgroup that deals with your OS.
