It's the "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture". It's a C library (and
kernel audio subsystem).
You need to find a more appropriate newsgroup, or perhaps try a google search.
It comes with an API reference, AFAICT. libasound2-doc on Debian.
There's also a whole bunch of programs that use it--the OP should take
a look at their source.
