Precedence determines the priority of the operators. Consider whether the expression:
i + j * k should be evaluated as i + (j * k) or (i + j) * k

The * has a higher precedence than + so the former is the correct result. Note that the () can be used to alter the order of evaluation, e.g. x = (i + j) * k.

Hi all, this post contains at the end a handy module that I've used quite often when I wanted to analyse the occasional complex expression and how it was to be evaluated. The function analyse_expression is called with a single string argument containing an expression. Names are allowed (actually, preferred over numbers ;-), since the function eval's in a protected dictionary, where names are generated as needed.

After browsing though many newsgroups articels I'm still not shure how operator precedence, operator associativity, sequence points, side effects go together. Currently I have the following view: An expression a = b() + c() * d++; can be transformed with the rules of operator associativity and operator precedence into a tree

I have a statement as follows, a = b++; why b=b+1 after a=b. I check the C language precedence (K&R Page 52) , ++ should has higher precedence than = . Rick

Hi, In case of following expression: c = a && --b; if a is 0,b is not evaluated and c directly becomes 0. Does this mean that && operator is given a higher precedence over '--'operator? as opposed to what is mentioned in precedence table? Also, with comma operator. consider,

hi, i am a bit confused on expression evaluation order in expressions involving unary increment.decrement operators along with binary operators. For example in the following expression x += i + j + k++;

Hi. I really need some advice on fine-tuning a stored procedure that is the meat of the search logic on my site. Customers are allowed to save searches, which dumps the search logic in a table called SavedSearches for later access to the search. My problem started with the ORDERBY condition used for zipcode searches. The condition did something like: "order by CASE WHEN userID=67 THEN 1 WHEN userID=103 THEN 2 WHEN

Hello, I have just joined and this is my first post. I have never been able to resolve the issue of order of evaluation in C/C++ and the related issue of precedence of operators, use of parentheses. 1) "The order of evaluation of subexpressions is determined by the precedence and grouping of operators."

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
