Network interrogation -> store network elements and connections -> draw a diagram of

Hello,

I am a student and has been given a project to:

1. Pick a network, interrogate it on what elements(pcs, printers, hosts, hubs, switches, ports) it has and how they are connected

2. Store extracted information

3. Use that information to draw a diagram

Tool should be automatic and able to deal with a network of 10000s elements size.

What I want advise on is what method/technique/approach is best to use. All code has to be written by me. I have looked at RIP and SNMP protocols, ping & ipconfig. Apart from that not much. Please be so kind and point me in the direction I need to dig my head into.

Thank you very much.
