The form is acually not the program, when you create a background worker, your program will stay open as long as the worker needs to complete it's task, even if you close a form that is running in an application. If you spawn a background worker from a form, you may find the form will wait for the background worker to finish before it closes, during this period the form is said to be 'closing', and no further interaction is possible.
