reading from InfraRed?

I have a medical device which has an infrared and i want to know how can i
read data from it using the infrared/

I suppose it depends on the device. However, my experience has been
that for computers I've had that have IrDA input ports on them, those
ports are accessible through both a COM serial driver and a Winsock
network driver.

If your medical device is compatible with an IrDA input port, then it
should be as simple as reading from the IrDA port using the normal COM
or network APIs.

If not, then you probably need some custom IR receiver specific to the
device, and thus you would need to find out from the device's
manufacturer the specifics.
