found example of using a waithandle like
myManualResetEvent.WaitOne(timeoutVal, false) after calling the the begin
portion of the asynch operation... the callback signals the waithandle when
done so essentially this establishes a timeout mechanism.
works for me. Is this pretty much how it should be done?

VS 2005 help says they are only for the synchronous send and receive
methods. So what about the asynchronous calls? How are timeouts handled?
