Saving changed data to file in a secure way

Hi!

In my wordpad application I'll let the application be loaded a
startpage with information.

When user click a calendar, startpage will be closed (not a midi app),
a RichText box will display the chosen file, if exists, and user can
edit textfile.

Now, if user, for some reason - while editing a textfile - chooses to
go back to startpage, I have a procedure that checks if RichTextbox is
modified and thereby let user choose to save changes or not.

My question:

What method will be safest to ensure that changes really get saved
before startpage loads again.

A common if...else or should this be done in other way.

I'll be thankful for suggestion as I don't have the knowledge on this
thing myself.
