Trouble with TreeNode Remove()

Having trouble with System.Windows.Forms.TreeNode.

TreeNode parentnode = valid node with child node

parentnode.FirstNode.Remove() removes the child node but unfortunately sets
parentnode == null. Removing a child seems to nullify the reference to its
parent. What is happening here? Using NET 1.1.

Thanks.
