Hanging automated Office program

I have an automated application to manipulate multiple Office documents.
When the process is opening the documents, some of them run into security
issues, macro errors, and anything else that produces an unexpected dialog.
As a result the process hangs until the dialog is closed. I dont have direct
access to the code of the application so I need to make a background process
that detect if a dialog is produced while opening documents. I am pretty
sure, from trying to search the net, that I'm going to need to use the Win32
API to catch windows messages. Does anyone know of a way to do this? This
is kind of a time-sensative matter so any input or pointers are greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance!
