accessing frames from avi

Hi
Can someone give me some pointers as to how to access frames from an AVI
file as quickly as possible.

If it makes any difference...
I first need to access them sequentially (forward) as quickly as
possible, but then I need to be able to access them in no particular
order. This second step does not have the requirement of speed.
I'm currently playing with this code:
http://www.codeproject.com/cs/media/avifilewrapper.asp

But it doesn't seem to be the most efficient, especially when
interpreted (as opposed to compiled).

Is there a better/easier - and more importantly - faster way of
accessing frames?

The AVI is in DV-I format, but it can be converted, if its easier from
another format.
Thanks for any help :)
Regards,

Andrew Bullock
