programmatic to ftp virtual directories

when i connect to an ftp server and i only have access to a few of the ftp
virtual directories, do i just change directory to them after connecting and
having credentials authorized? is there some special protocol for changing
directories to authorized virtiual directories?

Yes, the FTP protocol includes commands for transversing directories. How
you would implement this, as you haven't been specific about your FTP client
implementation.

and the bicycle has to *want* to change.

Yes, that;s the way, you first need to authenticate and only after you can
access it, even if the server does support anonymous access you need to
authenticate.

Nop, it;s already part of the FTP protocol, you could find a client in
either sourceforge.net , or codeproject.com
