Desktop Client with Secure Communication to Web Application

I'm an intermediate-advanced .NET developer, and I want to develop a
desktop application which can communicate securely with a web
application (preferably PHP). Does anybody have any recommendations
for me to get started? I could easily use System.Net.WebRequest to
make requests to URLs like test.com/login?u=username&p=hashed-password,
and then get the result of that page to see if the login was
successful, but I know this wouldn't be secure. How do some of the
desktop blogging programs communicate with XML-RPC securely? Do I need
to use HTTPS? I also want to keep performance in mind. Any
recommendations to help me get started would be extremely helpful.
