Possible: SelectSingleNode, but omit child nodes in result?

KJ
I'd like to do as the message subject states: only get the specified
node, omittting the children in the result. Is this possible? Perhaps a
special XPath predicate is needed?

I don't think so. Why not just use your node and ignore the children?
