ActiveSync 4.0 - Why no manual sync?

I just want to stick my PPC in its cradle and have it charge... and nothing
else. What is so wrong with that? Why won't Microsoft let me do that very
simple thing??

Probably because the implication when you connect your device to the
computer is that you want to sync. Every device that I've owned has come
with a separate charger. So you can probably plug your device directly into
power and charge that way.
