Event Handling in Windows Forms

Can I ask the reasoning of the Event Handling of Windows Forms? Many years
ago MS programmers told us that the MFC model was better than the OWL (OWL =
Borland) model, because the OWL model had to use huge v-tables (one virtual
function for every message) while the MFC model was nearly v-table-less. Now
the .NET has a virtual function for every message (the OnSomething
functions) plus a "private" event table for every message. Clearly other
"options" where available when MS built the .NET framework So there must be
a reason. (or so I hope :-) )
