Why do you only consider "third party" COM components? The number of third
party components you will ever register is only a small fraction of the
system components, and the registry is not only used to register COM
classes.....

Any well behaved software that uses the registry should only do this via
the API provided by Windows - so it's generally possible that the same API
methods would simply work differently. Instead of querying the registry as
we know it, they could retrieve values from some other source, like WinFS
for instance, without any changes to existing apps.

Anyway, I don't think any such change has been made in Vista.

No you didn't, but someone who "heard there is no registry anymore in Vista"
might get the impression it's only used for third party COM from reading
your answer.
