Listen to events from other applications

Hi,

I wonder if it is possible to listen to events from other applications
that you have not written yourself and that you don't know anything
about? Notepad or any other windows application for instance? I would
like to listen to all kinds of events (mouse clicks, text written in
the application, images shown etc). In general I want to know as much
as possible of what's happening in an application, that I haven't
written, but programatically. I want my application to "see" what we
usually see on the screen without using image processing. How do I do
that?

Best regards,

Eric
