about "asp:" TagPrefix:TagName

Dear colleagues,
In an usual HTML .aspx tag element such as asp:Button ... /asp:Button,
it is reasonable to assume that the TagPrefix "asp:" is the alias of a
namespace. Fine.

Does anyone know whether this assumption is true, and--most important--
where this alias is defined? I'm really intrigued, more for reason of
completeness than of simple curiosity. Thank you.
P.M.
