schema question

I have a large schema which contains several complex types and the
schema definition.

However I would not like to add a new schema definition which shares
some of the complex types. Therefore I would want to have three xsd
files. Complex Types, Schema1 and Schema2.

The complex types are like;

<xs:complexType name="item">
<xs:sequence>
<xs:element name="Price" type="xs:int">
<xs:element name="Description" type="xs:string">
</xs:sequence>
</xs:complexType>

So in say schema1 I would like to import the Complex type and maybe
append to it

I tried something like this;

<imported the complex type xsd schema>

<xs:complexType name="ItemDetails">
<xs:sequence>
<xs:element name="Id" type="xs:int">
<xs:element name="PictureFile" type="xs:string">
<xs:element ref="ComplexTypeDefn:item" />
</xs:sequence>
</xs:complexType>

However this doesn't work

Can anyone point me in the right direction....or a good web site.

Cheers,
