Embedding icons within an app

I would like to associate an icon embedded within my C# executable with data
files that the application creates. How would you recommend it be done?

Ideally, I would like to use my installer to associate files with a unique
extension with a resource embedded within my executable, but I'm not sure
how to do it. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Jon
