.NET Comonent vs COM component

What is the difference between a COM component and a .NET comonent. Explain

COM is a Model on which they build softwares so its could be used as a
component for some other software.

..NET Componets are also biult by using this Model too.But i am not sure
if they are platform independent or not.Because what i know is, .NET is
totally Windows based programming.

if some one can tell in bettter way?
