which version of Visual Studio do I need to develope applications for the
longhorn sidebar?

I'm no expert by any means, but I can tell you that I was watching an MS
video recently in which they were writing sample apps for the sidebar.
All they were using was Emacs and the command line compiler. So I would
hazard the guess that once Longhorn is out, you should be able to write
sidebar extensions using a standard Windows install, with Notepad and
the command line compiler.

I believe you have to match the PDC build of VS.NET with the PDC build
of Lonhorn. Those were the only version that 'officially' worked
together.

You can do any of that development with longhorn installed, using the
command line compiler and notepad.
