system.windows.forms.timer and debugging

I'm using a System.Windows.Forms.Timer object to poll a comms port. If the
poll finds a device attached to the other end, a form is created, some
configuration files are loaded and the form is left for the user to
interface with.
The problem is that in debug mode, my code breakpoints are rarely stopped at
from this code run in context of the timer.
If I later open the form from a button on my main form, the code breakpoints
are hit correctly.
Does anyone have any ideas please?
