Julia,
If the structure of the XML is different, then yes, you will have to
transform the XML in some manner so that the XmlSerializer will be able to
initialize the values on the type correctly.
Personally, I would use XSL to transform the XML into something the
XmlSerializer will not bomb out on, and then use that.
