Dan,
You can't, it is always initialized with a value (the default value
being all the bits zeroed out). If you want to determine whether or not
there is a lack of value, for now, you will have to use the SQLDateTime
structure, which has a property that exposes whether or not it is null.
This will become more generic in the future, with the use of the generic
type Nullable<T>, which you would then supply the DateTime type as the type
parameter.
Generics will be available in .NET 2.0.
