Ada,
I think that the ListView control might be the best selection for you,
since that is what is used in explorer. However, the .NET version probably
doesn't expose all the functionality that is currently available in the
listview control, so you will have to resort to sending windows messages for
the appropriate actions you want to take.
Using Spy++, it looks like all it is doing is setting the imagelist to a
normal imagelist (not icons), and then setting the border selection property
to highlight the borders. This might be all you have to do as well.
Hope this helps.

if you go to Windows Explorer and select a directory that contained a
bunch of images, then go to VIEW > THUMBNAILS you will see a thumbnails of all the images in the folder.
to familiarize myself with C# code, i want to do something like that.
i was thinking of using LISTVIEW and IMAGELIST controls.
i've been testing various codes but cannot get the image to display.
just wondering if LISTVIEW and IMAGELIST controls are the best candidate
for this job. or, is there another control(s) can do it better/easier?
any sample codes or suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA
