William Stacey is right, dongles are often a reason for customers *not* to
buy a software.
Admitted, dongles are one of the hardest protections to crack.
But instead you should provide the customers reasons to buy your product
(good support and online-services available only for registered clients)

I am interested in working on more secure ways of distributing software,
which is done via hardware dongles in many cases. However, I really don't
even know where to start reading about how it all works. Is there any
information out there about how dongle/hardware security works and how it
is typically cracked?
