garbage coll is not working

Regardless of what some people say, .NET has huge problem with memory
consumption
and even if it has small ammount of memory available, it keeps consuming it
until program crashes.
One of modules in my program displays a datagrid with sale items. There are
cca 8000 items by 10 columns. When a form with this datagrid is loaded,
program consumes 10-15mb of ram.
When form is closed, even though I dispose datagrid manually and force
garbage collection via GC.Collect, it does not release any memory.
I thought it was because it had a lot of memory at disposal so I put 256mb
ram and disabled virtual memory.
Program still consumes a lot of memory and eventually crashes.
(another form displays a datagrid with 5-6 rows of data and still takes
3-5mb)
I though problem was with datagrid, so I loaded data into rtf in another
form. Memory consumption is the same, and program crashes
after it runs out of free ram.

So I ask: is .NET meant only for small apps and utilites?
How can I explain to my customers that their POS system have to have 512mb
ram on P4 2400+
Because my program is by performance the worst shit I have ever seen.

Andrija
