Sockets data loss

Hi,

I wrote a TCP server using sockets. This server keeps about 3000
client connections open (not my idea) and routinely checks whether
there is any new data being sent (using Socket.select). The problem
is that sometimes (especially when lots of calls occur at once) data
being transferred is lost. i.e. never gets through. Specifically, if
I send 3000 requests, one every 10 milliseconds to each client socket,
about 10 won't get through. This number seems to vary depending on
how many clients I have connected.

Any ideas why this might occur? Is there some time limit on a socket
and if data is not read from it in that span then it gets cleared? If
only a few transmissions occur every second this is not a problem.
