how to replace a node innerText with a new string ?

Hello group,

When I run an XPATH query first as:

//*[contains(translate(.,\"ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ\ ",
\"abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz\")

Then within a loop like:

foreach(XmlNode xnode in node.SelectNodes(s))

{

}

The program tries to find/locate the innetText of the node, which contains
the information user, has entered. The problem is the program considers a
huge block of xml body; as innertext at first stage and as the process goes
on (in loop) the innetText gets smaller and smaller and finally it returns
the word or string which base on that the query is submitted. I'm trying to
replace located string with a new string but don't know how to find out
which node is representing the one which should be replaced. Or which
InnerText is the one which, should be replaced.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

C# Newbie,

Please note that if you have an XML section which looks
like this.

<Parent>
<Child>SomeText</Child>
</Parent>

Then the innerText of the Parent node witll b e the ENTIRE
Child node, like this

<Child>SomeText</Child>

Where as innerText for the Child node will be

SomeText

Why do you want to do it this way?
It would be simpler to write the XPath to return the correct result in
the first place.

For example, if you want to find the following:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<User_Sumbitted>
<Data>
<First>some text</First>
<Second>more text</Second>
<Data>
</User_Sumbitted>

just query:
string(/User_Sumbitted/Data/First/text()) - this will give you the
*text*, not the node.

If you want to replace do this:

XmlDocument xdoc = new XmlDocument();
xdoc.LoadXml(
@"<?xml version="1.0"?>"+
"<User_Sumbitted>"+
"<Data>"+
"<First>some text</First>"+
"<Second>more text</Second>"+
"<Data>"+
"</User_Sumbitted>";
XPathNavigator xnav = xdoc.CreateNavigator();
XPathNodeIterator it = xnav.Evaluate(@"/User_Submitted/Data/First/text()");
if(it.MoveNext())
it.Current.Value = "some new text";
xdoc.Save(System.StandardOutput);

Andreas you did point to a good issue thanks. Please let me know how can I find out the node only has "SomeText" not the whole <Child>SomeText</Child>

That would help me out with my current problem. I tried HasChildren but it's not what I was looking for!
I just want to work with <child> node which don't have children and replace the innterText of it.

I will appreciate it

Yes, but here we have a different situation! the "text" I"m looking for,
could be any where within an xml file. so the code should search for it at
any possible place within the xml file.
but thank for your help.

C# Newbie,

Why not rewrite your XPath query so it does not return <Child> tags
which has nested <Child> tags ? Kinda hard to say without knowing the
datamodel which your XML has.
