how to secure a socket application?

I would like to implement security on a chat client/server program but don't
have any previous knowledge on what this really means and how to do it. If
there are any resources you could advice me to see on the subject it would
be great...

Encrpytion? Login? Anti hacking? Security can mean many things.

Yes, i need to decide what to implement. But I'm interested in loging and
anti hacking mainly and also would like to implement encryption later...
