conditional xml element serialization during runtime

I'm using XML serialization controlled over attributes to serialize a
couple of simple hierarchical objects into XML.
My problem is, that I have a couple of elements within the object tree
to be serialized that might be excluded from serialization depending on
their state. Therefore, I need to include some kind of inspection into
the serialization process:
protected override SomeMethod (object obj, SomeXmlWriterOrSo x)
{
ConditionalField f = obj as ConditionalField;
if (f != null && f.DoNotSerialize)
return;
}
I know there would be workarounds (detach the objects from the ArrayList
before serialization and add them again etc.), but I hope there will be
a better way...
