What makes someone an MVP?

I thought at first it was Microsoft Verified Programmer in regards to a qualification you can earn from microsoft.
I remember in another conversation an MVP said it mean Most Valued Programmer or omething like that.
If that is the case what is the difference between an MVP and a non MVP?

service".

How does that work?
XSmall means smaller and XLarge means larger so does XM mean larger medium? If so is there a LM (smaller medium L = less, opposite of Extra)?

That is their own process, I believe. But I've read in a thread about MVP
award before that on the Indian MVP site there is an application form where
the indian programmers can apply to be nominated. But either way MS guys do
assessment before nominate the candidates.

Some MVPs are nominated by other MVPs, and some are nominated by people
within Microsoft. The nominations then go through an approval process, where
several MS people look at what the nominee has done and make a decision. The
same thing happens each year at re-award time, though the vast majority of
MVPs do such a great job that it's merely a formality.

Do you get a trophy? We don't get trophy's per se, however we do get some nice gifts, I'm sorry
awards.
Have there ever been cases of fake MVP's giving bad advice or poser MVP's? Any one can put anything they want in the display name when they post. If
you spend enough time in the newsgroups you can tell who knows what they are
talking about and who doesn't.
