Drop Down Editing

I am trying to set the default item in a dropdown list on the fly,
I would like to be able to retrieve a value from a Database and set
the value that I just retrieved as the default list item.

That way if someone does not update the item, the value remains
unchanged.

I am using a DataList that will uupdate the item using the
EditItemIndex.

Any solutions will be greatly appreciated
