P2P Using server

Hi! I'm member of a school projekt that is going to make a
IM applikation. My jobb is to make the peer to peer
communication work. The client sends via the server that
he has a file he wants to share. Then someone can answer
and once a communication-line has been made they can send
files to each other without goint via the server.

where can I find help about this?

look at the code base for tools like emule, or xmule (open source I think).
Or, look at the development kit for instamt messenger.
