Data Connections Issue

I am using vstudio 7, c#. When I go the the server explorer to create a
data connection, if I do NOT have a an active network connection (i.e., I
use a laptop), the data-connections/Data Link Properties the 'Select a
Server Name' drop down remains empty. However, when i connect via cat-5 or
wireless network card, the local machine is populated into the 'Select a
Server Name' box, and then I can select the database I want. I am using
MSDE. It is strange, because, If I already have a data connection defined,
it is still active, but I can't add any more when disconnected... note-- the
data source is local!

Is this a bug/a glitch? Is there a fix, or an explanation?!
