Purchasing VS.NET on eBay

I think this should be on topic. Many of us here may have considered
purchasing Visual Studio.NET on eBay or other web auction sites. However, I
would like to issue a warning that there are some sellers who will list the
2003 promotional upgrade (for sale by Microsoft for $29), evaluation copies
or other limited license versions for $200 - $600. In many cases, there will
be nothing in the item description, other than the 'part number', that would
hint of it's identity. The seller will then argue that the buyer should have
verified the part number and will not issue a refund or exchange. The seller
will also maintain that the item photo is not required to match the actual
product shipped. I thought this would be good advice for potential buyers to
have before making a purchase.

If this happened to you, you should file a complaint with eBay. That's
a misrepresentation of the item.

I bought the full version of Visual Studio .NET 2002 Enterprise Architect
(PN #G77-00049) for just under $400 on E-Bay, then bought the $29 upgrade to
2003 from Microsoft. I feel like it was a great deal.

bought the upgrade and made illegal copies of the old version, then sold the
originals to me. I wouldn't knowingly purchase illegal merchandise, but
there are a number of legitimate reasons for fire-selling hardware and
software. So, I can't figure out what else I'm supposed to question.

some are legit - e.g. west coast startup company with lots of investment
captial, buys lots of "everything" then goes out of business, and
creditors or past employees sell residuals.

that's part of the source. the other is scam-related. tough thing is
to know which is which..

I sold a copy of VS 6 Pro that I won for cheap (compared to new) on ebay. I
had no need for the software, since I already had it thru my MSDN
subscription. That was very legit. You just have to check out the seller
carefully before you buy.
