Text reading

Sorry this must be very elementary.

When I apply the example in "Reading Text from a File" in the help file
(.NET Framework Developer's Guide) to a
simple text file like

the
cat
jumped
over
the
wall

words are printed two at a time. Maybe this has to do with the read buffer?
Could you please tell me which *code* will get them separated?
