ListViewItem.UpdateStateToListView() - NullReferenceException

_
I know this question is very general, but I want to throw it out here:
What's causing this? It's an exception I can't catch because it's not
passing through any of my code. How would I even begin to troubleshoot
something like this?

I'm developing with Visual Studio .net 2002 for .net 1.0 framework.
What's interesting to note, if the ListView is never on screen, then
it crashes like this. But if the ListView is shown, then hidden,
everything works fine.
