getting column name from dropdownlist and inserting into query

Guys please help
I am trying to run a search on my web application and the user is going
to first select from a dropdonmenu what column to select from and then
the user will type into a textbox the value that they are looking for. I
tried using "select * from table where (?=?)" but my application just
does not understand the first ?
Can anybody please help me?
Thank you in advance.

Are you using stored procedures?
Which database server are you using?
