Knowing if your connection failed

I am writing a application that sync out contacts in our system with
outlook. What I have to take in account is to show a message if the user
took his Laptop to home.Because this will mean his offline. Can anyone
help me find a way to know if the user is offline or online.I make a
call: dataService.Cre ateConnection(" Server", "Database", 200); So if
the connection fails I want to show message. On the moment the timeout
is set to 30 and it will take a while before it will fail.I want it
faster without setting the timeout.Does anyone know of a solution?

Thank you

The connections can come in as fast as 30+/sec, so...
