From not responding properly (DoEvents).

I use asynchronous call to send bytes to serial port. While bytes are
being sent I call Application.DoE vents().

The problem is that when I try to e.g. move the window or press a
buttom, the from doesn't respond the first time I do it. The buttom
responds (is pressed) when it's pressed for the second time.

Any suggestion?

I wrote a simple program in VB6 to copy all the files from a directory on a CD-ROM to my hard disk. There are about 10 files, each about 30MB. The program uses Get and Put to get data from the CD into a buffer and then put it into the disk. See code below. It works, but it slows down drastically before it copies all the files. Windows Task Manager shows the CPU usage gradually increasing as the files are copied, until it reaches 100...

I used to be able to create PDFs, automatically save them to a file, and mail them out to people. This was on Access 97 with Windows NT. We've changed to Windows XP and Access 2003. Doesn't work anymore. Part of the problem is that the users have no access to the registry and can only save files on the C:\ drive to their My Documents folder. I found this code on the web, but it doesn't work either. The files continue to print out of my...

I'm working on a win app that reads and processes each line of an ascii file until the end of the file. Since the file's 1.6 million lines long, after a while Windows displays the "Not Responding" although the application's running fine. Is it possible to add anything that'll stop Windows from displaying that? Also, how would I be able to always have control of the form in case I want to abort the process? Once it starts running, I...

My progress window is created by a secondary thread and then updated by it while a file is uploaded. There's an avi animation control on there that should show the move file avi. Plus a progress bar. Im having problems as the screen isn't being redrawn properly. If I call DoEvents each time then it works ok. I want to dump DoEvents to prevent problems. I'm calling the following from the progress property set function. InvokeRequired...

We've broken our app into various assemblies. The WinForm assembly provides the user interface, other assemblies provide various I/O services. I'd like to be able to call System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents from within a dll, but it isn't allowed. I don't want to link the dll to our WinForm exe which can call DoEvents. Is there some way to call DoEvents from within a dll? Thanks.

Hello all, This is my first time posting a question to this forum, so here is hoping I am following protocol. I am scraping the rust off my old Basic programming skills, and have just recently upgraded to VB.NET, and I have a lot of catching up to do. That being said, I have come a long way in a short while, however, I am stumped at the moment. I have read through days of posts, but have not been able to address my specific question, so...

The launcher program also checks for updates to MyApp located in 'Update' folder (on

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
